Why Rastafarian Emblem?
Many kinds of music have influences on fashion, for the example Hip-Hop music. It is one of popular music in Thailand, so it is not surprised that many people choose to wear Hip-Hop clothes style. Reggae music is one of popular style even if Thai people do not really know about this kind of music. It is very interesting.
The origin of Reggae music is in Jamaica. Most lyric of Reggae songs try to ask for freedom, stop the war and think in positive side. The Jamaican peoples try to express themselves by the song, hair-style including their clothes that base on their belief, Rastafarian. They use the color of flag of Ethiopia; Green, Gold and Red; in their clothes to show the freedom of African soul.
Ethiopia is the only independent country in Africa and the Rastafarians also believe that it is the Land of God, “Zion”. Nowadays, you can see the clothes or emblems that use these three colors anywhere. Most people think that it means Jamaican style. It is quite correct. Many people think that colors are the colors of Jamaica flag. It is exactly incorrect. Some people who think like this also wear Rastafarian emblem. They do not understand about Rastafarian People, Reggae Music but why they wear it?
The researcher would like to know why people choose to wear Rastafarian emblem. Most of them do not really know about its meaning. They only wear it as a fashion or maybe they know a little bit of meaning? If their knowledge is mistaken, it is fine, because it can be a positive thought. Some people who wear the Rastafarian emblem just want to show that they are the “Weed Smoker.” They refer to the Rastafarian belief to smoke ganja but they do not really know about its true meaning. Maybe they do not even listen to Reggae music. This kind of people give music a bad image and other people will think that people who like Reggae music or wear the Rastafarian emblem only like to get high.
The researcher has been interviewed the students who studying in School of Architecture and Design at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi. Their age range is 18 to 22 years old. One of the reasons that the researcher chooses these groups of people is that they are trendy people who have their own style. Another reason is many students in this school wear the “Rastafarian Emblem”.
